OCD responds well to the right treatment. With evidence-based therapy and support, the grip of intrusive thoughts and compulsions can ease significantly.
What is OCD?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involves unwanted, distressing thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive actions or mental rituals (compulsions) done to relieve the anxiety they cause. It can be exhausting and time-consuming — but it is a recognised, treatable medical condition, not a personality quirk or a lack of willpower.
Common signs
- Recurring, intrusive thoughts, images or fears
- Strong urges to repeat actions (checking, washing, counting)
- Needing things 'just right', ordered or symmetrical
- Spending significant time on rituals each day
- Anxiety or distress when rituals can't be completed
